Abstract
1,263,752. Emptying ballast tanks. RHEINSTAHL NORDSEEWERKE G.m.b.H. 17 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 8537/69. Heading B7M. A ballast pump 4 pumps out the liquid ballast of a ship from the ballast tanks 6 through a tunnel 5 formed of parts of the longitudinal structure of the ship and, in addition to being subjected to partial vacuum, the tunnel is connected to each tank by a suction pipe 7 which ends at 8 just above the bottom of the tank. The floor 19 of the tunnel is above reinforcing internal members 9 of the ship and the ceiling 20 of the tunnel is not higher than the tops of the ballast tanks. The pump is situated outside and above the tunnel. In the embodiment shown partial vacuum in the tunnel is maintained by a dome-like chamber 10 communicating with the tunnel and situated above the ceiling 20 near the pump.
