Abstract
1,262,811. Melt spinning apparatus. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 5 Feb., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 5524/70. Heading B5B. A synthetic polymer is melt-spun through a spinneret with orifices separated by less than 3À5 mm., as measured from orifice centre to orifice centre, with a stream of gaseous cooling medium blown on to the filaments at an angle, measured from the normal to the direction of movement of the filaments, of 10 degrees away from the spinneret to 60 degrees towards it and, during the spinning, with a stream of hot gas or vapour having a temperature within the range of from 120‹ to 250‹ C. passing directly along the side of the spinneret from which the filaments are extruded, which stream of hot gas or vapour protects the spinneret from being cooled by the stream of gaseous cooling medium directed on to the filaments. Preferably, the filaments are extruded vertically downwards with the hot gas or vapour at a temperature between 150‹ and 200‹ C. and the coolant directed perpendicular to the direction of movement of the filaments. The filaments may be given a potential crimp if the coolant is directed from one side of the filaments. The process may be used for polyesters, preferably polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, such as nylon 6 and nylon 66, and polyolefines, for example polyethylene and polypropylene.
