Abstract

Oxygen top-blowing of pig-iron is controlled by measuring the quantity of oxygen blown in; determing the quantity of Co burnt in the hood by measuring the temperature of the fumes, using the ratio K = [CO]/([CO] + [CO 2 ]) representing the proportion of CO in the CO + CO 2 in the fumes and a thermal balance; determining the rate of decarburization, the instantaneous C content of the metal, the distribution of oxygen between the metal and slag and the total quantity of oxygen supplied to the slag from the above measured and determined values; and regulating the blast conditions so that these four parameters approach or follow a predetermined course. The hood may operate with or without sprayed water cooling; the variation of the value of the ratio K may be allowed for in the determinations when its value is continually measured (e.g. by measurement of the noise level close to the mouth of the converter); and the determinations and control may be effected by a preferably digital computer. The control may be affected through the rate of oxygen flow, the height of the lance above the melt or the instantaneous quantity of oxygen blown in up to that time.
