Abstract
1,262,611. Electromechanical delay devices. CHU ASSOCIATES Inc. 10 March, 1970 [6 Oct., 1969], No. 11381/70. Heading H3U. A device for compressing a frequencymodulated input pulse, e.g. in "chirp" radar, comprises a single-crystal rod 1<SP>1</SP> of YIG disposed in a cylindrical hole extending through a sphere 1 of polycrystalline YIG. The optically flat end faces of the rod 1<SP>1</SP> carry, respectively, an input shear-wave electrostrictive transducer 2 and an output longitudinal-wave electrostrictive transducer 4. The sphere 1 is uniformly wound with a solenoid coil 3 energized by a ramp generator 5, the entire structure being magnetized to saturation by a permanent or electromagnet N-S. The current I supplied by generator 5 has the waveform shown to produce a substantially uniform spatial magnetic field which varies in time. The generator 5 is turned on for each successive chirp pulse applied to the transducer 2 whereby at a certain value of the generator current I the magnetic field causes conversion of the elastic shear-wave to a spin wave and then to an elastic longitudinal-wave. The high-frequency components of the input pulse are delayed in the rod 1<SP>1</SP> more than the lowfrequency components whereby a compressed pulse is generated at the output transducer 4. Moreover, since the ratio of the propagation velocities of the longitudinal waves and shear waves is about two to one, the pulse compression factor is improved by a factor of about two.
