Abstract

1,262,522. Collecting underwater deposits. BEAR CREEK MINING CO. 3 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 11189/69. Heading E1F. [Also in Divisions F3 and G2] Apparatus for collecting specimens of material from the floor of a body of water comprises a pair of jaws 5 and 6 to gather the specimens, means to cause the jaws to close on reaching the floor, ballast means 12, 13 supported on the jaws to cause the apparatus to descend, and released in response to the closing of the jaws, and buoyancy spheres 9-11 to return the apparatus to the surface upon release of the ballast means. Each jaw is pivoted at 78 or 94 on the base and comprises a pair of side plates with knife edges 71, 92, cutter 80 or 90 and a back composed of a metal plate or of a flexible sample retaining bag 98 or 101 of an imperforate Qr mesh material: Resilient bands 103-105 urge the. jaws into the closed position. When the apparatus reaches the floor cables 127 and 129 which normally hold the jaws in open position are released by cup 123 connected to the buoyancy spheres 10, 11 being urged downwardly due to the momentum of the spheres. The buoyancy sphere 9 comprises a pair of hemispheres of glass or transparent plastic and contain a camera (see Division G2) to take a photograph of the floor. When the apparatus reaches the water surface a smoke and flare assembly 14 (see Division F3) is actuated. Alternatively a radio transmitter may be used. The spheres 10, 11 may be braced or contain low density liquid or be replaced by a sphere of a plastics material impregnated with gas or containing air cells.
