Abstract

1,261,691. Black glass fibre compositions; multi-glass fibres. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Jan., 1970 [22 Jan. 1969], No. 2495/70. Heading C1M. A composition to give black glass, particularly for light-absorbing portions in multifibre optical elements, consists of in percentages by weight: SiO 2 50-70; B 2 O 3 0-25: Li 2 O 0-2; Na 2 O 0-15; K 2 O 0-10; combined Li 2 O, Na 2 O, K 2 O 5-20; Al 2 O 3 2-4; CaO 0-5; MgO 0-8; BaO 0-5; As 2 O 3 0-2; Fe 2 O 3 0-10; V 2 O 5 0-10; combined Fe 2 O 3 , V 2 O 5 5-15. A number of examples are given. Specifications 1,113,229 and 1,229,528 are referred to. Bonded multi-fibres as in Specification 1,229,528 are packed into a borosilicate glass tube of the same glass as that of the cladding glass, evacuated, sealed and heated for ¢-1 hour at 700‹ C.
