Abstract
1,261,345. Xanthates; thiocarbonates; thiocarbamates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Feb., 1969 [7 March, 1968], No. 11185/68. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of the formula where Z represents a phenyl radical which may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms or by alkyl, nitro, alkoxy or alkoxycarbonyl groups, X represents a cyano, nitro, COOR<SP>4</SP> or COR<SP>4</SP> group wherein R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrocarbon radical and A represents a group OR, SR or NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> where R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrocarbon groups, R<SP>1</SP> is additionally a hydrogen atom or the group NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> may represent a heterocyclic ring system optionally containing further hetero atoms. They are prepared by reacting the appropriate α-halobenzyl compound of the formula with the appropriate di- or trithio carbonate or dithiocarbamate salt, e.g. an alkali metal salt thereof. The compounds of the invention have biocidal activity and together with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier, and if desired one or more wetting, dispersing, emulsifying or suspending agents, they may be applied to plants, the locus of plants, plant seeds or to the soil as pesticidal compositions.
