A tower, used for precipitating, by means of carbon dioxide, NaHCO 3 from a precarbonated ammoniated NaCl/NaOH liquor according to the ammonia-soda process is de-encrusted by treating with an. ammonia-free NaCl/NaOH which may or may not be precarbonated, and passing the liquor from the tower to an optional pre-carbonating stage and then to an ammonia absorbing stage, the liquor so obtained being suitable for the precipitation of further NaHCO 3 . The precarbonation may be brought about by means of waste gases containing CO 2 . The NaCl/NaOH liquor may derive from a diaphragm cell and may be mixed with purified NaCl solution.
