Abstract
1,260,577. Carbon fibres and bodies. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 12 Nov., 1969 [10 Dec., 1968], No. 55339/69. Heading C1A. A fibrous carbonaceous product comprising a matrix consisting of a resin converted to the carbonaceous state and a plurality of straight carbonaceous fibres uniformly dispersed in and randomly orientated throughout said matrix, is prepared by mixing a carbonizable binder and straight carbonaceous fibres of virtually uniform length of 6-15 mils and diameter of 1-10 microns, spraying the mixture on to a form and thereafter heating the sprayed mixture in an inert atmosphere to a temperature sufficient to convert the binder to a carbonaceous state, said fibres being subjected to temperature at least as great as the first mentioned temperature prior to the mixture of the fibres with the binder for a period sufficient to effect the formation of said carbonaceous fibres. The binder may be a thermoplastic resin, a thermosetting resin or a mixture thereof and may be diluted with a suitable solvent to facilitate spraying. The binder is preferably cured prior to carbonization and the sprayed admixture may be stressed at some stage of the process. The composite may also be impregnated with a liquidus carbonizable resin subsequent to carbonization and the impregnated composite heated to carbonize the resin. The ratio of binder to fibres is from 60 to 100 parts per-hundred.
