Abstract
1,260,569. Coating apparatus. CARRIER ENG. CO Ltd. 18 Aug., 1970 [3 Sept., 1969], No. 43669/69. Headings B2F and B2L. Apparatus for coating surfaces of a succession of articles of different shapes and sizes by a spray gun reciprocable along a path in a first plane during movement of the surfaces in past the gun in a second plane at right angles to the first plane comprises means for detecting the shape and size of the surfaces, a variable profile cam to control the movement of the gun in the first plane and control means connected to the sensing means to actuate cam profile adjusting means to maintain the position of emission of the spray gun at a predetermined distance from the surface being sprayed. As shown the cams comprise channel members 15, 27 each having one end pivoted at 25 and the other end movable by a pneumatic piston 30, 31 or 22. The piston and cylinder arrangements can move the cams to the positions 27a, 27b or 15a under the control of photoelectric sensing means. A flexible metal strip 32 is located in the bottom of the channel to provide a continuous transfer from one member to the other. The metal strip is kept under tension by a spring 33. In a modification (not shown) the channel is divided into three sections and a further pneumatic cylinder is provided to move the pivot point between the two upper sections. A spray gun 4 is carried by an arm 82 attached to a piston rod 79 on a pneumatic cylinder 77. The spray gun support is reciprocated vertically and during normal operation the spray gun is horizontal but movement of the roller 84 by the cam surface causes a difference in inclination of the spray gun.
