Abstract

1,260,415. Valves. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 27 March, 1969 [18 April, 1968], No. 16134/69. Heading F2V. [Also in Division F1] In a fuel-injection pump each of inlet and spill valves 21, 22 actuated by a piston 25 through levers 27, 28 comprises a valve-member 1 with a stem 2 slidable in a casing 3, which in addition to a seat surface 10 and bores 16 has an annular projection 14 co-operating with an annular projection 7 to form a throttling orifice. When the valve 21 is closing fuel flows in the reverse direction towards an inlet duct 33, cavitation and pressure waves in said duct being prevented by turbulence in an annular chamber 13. The area of the throttling orifice is rendered smaller than that of the gap between the surface 10 and the member 1 when the latter approaches said surface so that the pressure in the chamber 13 is sufficient to prevent cavitation occurring therein. The pressure and turbulence in the chamber 13 of the valve 22 suppresses pressure waves that are liable to form in a spill duct 34 when this valve opens.
