Retorts and methods of working.-In retort ovens with vertical or steeply inclined retorts of the kind described in Specification 5414/90, wherein one or more sides of the retorts are provided with closely spaced openings through which the gases escape, a collecting flue extending longitudinally of a wall of the retort is divided by fixed partitions to separate the products from different parts of the charge. The partitions H slope downwardly away from the retort and rest on ribs on the retort. The products are collected by piping provided with cocks L, and, when several retorts are mounted in the oven, the products from the sections of each at the same level are collected in tubes B. The collecting tubes may serve also for the injection of gases and vapours into the retort. To prevent leakage from the heating-flues to the distillation chambers when metal retorts are used, wings or projections A, Fig. 6, are provided on the retort. Metal retorts may be formed in as many sections as there are distillation sections, as shown in Fig. 9, the distillation chamber being integral with the retort. Holes 0 may be provided which may serve as observation flues or for the insertion of a. poker or pyrometer. The walls of the retorts may be formed with internal transverse undulations to facilitate the descent of the charge. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprised also the application of the invention to retorts of circular or oval crosssection. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
