Abstract
1,259,405. Blasting. CARBORUNDUM CO. 10 June, 1970 [27 June, 1969], No. 28058/70. Heading B3D. A treating apparatus comprises particle feed means 10 for storing and supplying treating particles, a treating nozzle 14 communicating with the feed means, means for pressurizing the feed means and nozzle, metering means 16 for causing the selective communication of the nozzle with the feed means, the pressure means being adapted to actuate the opening and closing of the metering means which includes a particle outlet 20 extending from the feed means and having an opening, and a metering gate 22 disposed in sliding contact with the outlet and having an opening at least one of the openings having a narrow loading surface becoming wider in the direction away from the surface whereby the degree of registry of the openings of the outlet and gate controls the amount of flow of particles to the nozzle. The feed means 10 includes a chamber 12; which may be the lowermost of a plurality of chambers as described in Specification 1,224,649, and is mounted on the metering means 16. The outlet 20 of the motoring means may be of square, rectangular, circular or other geometric shape and leads into a chamber 34 connected by a pipe 36 to the nozzle 14. The sliding gate 22 has an opening 24 of the same or different geometric shape, is pressed by a U-shaped spring 38 against the outlet, and is connected to a diaphragm 30. A spring 28 acts to urge the gate to close the flow through the outlet. Pressure in the chamber 34 acts on the diaphragm to move the gate to an open position determined by an adjustable screw 32. Wear of the gate may be minimized by the use of polyurethane or similar material. In other embodiments, the diaphragm is replaced by an air cylinder or other actuating means.
