Abstract
1,259,100. Preserving liquids. GRANTS OF ST. JAMES'S Ltd. 10 Oct., 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 33689/68. Heading A2D. [Also in Divisions B8 and C3] The storage capability of oxygen-sensitive products such as beverages and fruit juices, is improved by incorporating in the storage container a solid material having incorporated therein and which is permeable there to an antioxidant which is sulphur dioxide or a sulphur dioxide liberating material, the rate of diffusion of sulphur dioxide or the sulphur dioxide liberating material being sufficient to reduce chemically the oxygen present in or diffusing into the container. The solid material containing the antioxidant may be in sheet or film form, or may form the container. Alternatively the antioxidant may be encapsulated or incorporated in bags or sachets which are then added to the storage container. The antioxidant may be incorporated in a porous material i.e. cork or expanded polystyrene, and for instance used as the cork stopper for the container. Suitable sulphur dioxide liberating substances are the ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphites, bisulphites or metabisulphites.
