Abstract
1,258,609. Casting processes; ingot moulds. Y. MATSUNAGA. 27 Oct., 1969 [28 Oct., 1968], No. 52601/69. Heading B3F. Ingots or iron, steel, nickel or cobalt or their alloys are cast in thin walled moulds 5 preferably of chromium steel floating on a molten bath 2. The bath which acts as a coolant, may comprise molten lead, and/or high density molten slags or salts. The ingot mould sinks into the molten bath as it becomes full to solidify the ingot from the base upwards. A layer of heat-insulating material can be placed upon the molten bath to reduce heat loss. If desired, the bath can be cooled by flowing coolant in passages 3. When casting stainless steel at 1600‹ C., a bath temperature of 400‹ to 600‹ C. is employed. The Specification also discloses shallow moulds for slab casting, which can be divided into a number of sections to provide several billets from one mould. A coil may surround the mould (of a non-magnetic stainless alloy or stainless steel) so that when energized during cooling the cast ingot is subjected to a magnetic field to prdouce a magnetically anisotropic ingot. The mould may be subjected to ultrasonic vibration during cooling to produce a finegrained ingot.
