Abstract

1,258,275. Coating with carbon. GULF OIL CORP. Jan. 31, 1969 [Jan. 18 1968], No. 1907/69. Heading C7F. [Also in Division C1] Articles, e.g. uranium dicarbide or thoriumuranium dicarbide nuclear fuel particles are coated with low and high density pyrolytic carbon layers by decomposition of hydrocarbons. The high density carbon has a B.A.F. of not more than 1À2, and a density above 50% of maximum theoretical. The H.D. carbon is deposited using propane or methane or mixture thereof at a temperature below 1400‹C. (1250 to 1400). The L.D. carbon is deposited below 1400‹C. using acetylene or at high temperatures 1800 to 2200‹C. using propane or methane or a mixture thereof. In a specific example, thorium-uranium dicarbide spheroids diameter 150 to 250 microns in a graphite reaction tube heated to 1300‹C. are subjected to an upward flow of helium to form a fluidized bed. Acetylene is then substituted for the helium at a flow rate of 10, 000 c.c. per minute to form a L.D. carbon coating. The acetylene is then replaced by a mixture of propane and helium at a total flow rate of 10,000 c.c. per minute to deposit the H.D. layer of carbon. Additional coatings of the carbides of silicon, zirconium, and niobium may be applied with the carbon.
