Abstract

1,257,964. Sampling liquids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 27 Jan., 1969, No. 4476/69. Heading B8N. [Also in Division B1] A sampling valve comprises a slide reciprocable in a housing between two positions, the slide having a passage or recess and the housing having liquid delivery and exit ports and a sample exit port. When the slide is in a first position the passage or recess communicates with the liquid delivery and exit ports, and in the second position the passage or recess is in communication with the sample exit port. The valve further includes means between the material delivery port and sample exit port for drawing liquid held between the slide and housing. As illustrated the slide 1 has an annular groove 10, and the housing includes liquid delivery and exit ports 3, 4, a carrier material inlet port 5, a sample exit port 6, and annular drainage passages 8, 12, 13 communicating via duct 11 with a port 14. An eccentric cam 16 rotated by an electric motor causes reciprocation of a carriage 14 on which the slide is mounted. Pin 19 prevents rotation of the slide. The slide may be driven by a crank or hydraulically or it may be operated electrically by a solenoid actuated by a timing switch. The passage 8 prevents seepage of liquid from the liquid delivery port 3 to the sample exit port 6, and is particularly advantageous, when a marker e.g. a radio-active chemical, a dye-stuff or chemically identifiable material is being used to indicate a change in the composition of the material being sampled, to prevent "smearing" of the marker.
