Abstract

1,257,737. Level indicating. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, R. E. MARTIN and E. F. HASLER. 26 June, 1970 [11 April, 1969], No. 18693/69. Heading G4H. The water level in a boiler is detected by four level detectors 11, 12, 13 and 14; faults in the apparatus are detected by comparing the outputs of the detectors. Detectors A and B detect the water level at the same point, are compared at 25 and any difference causes an alarm 26 to be sounded. Detectors C and D operate in a similar manner. Detectors A and C are compared at 30 and detectors B and D are compared at 33, the differences recorded between these pairs of detectors are used to control the operation of the boiler by means of controlled circuitry 32. If a fault is detected then the alarm 26 sends an inhibit signal to the control circuitry 32 to prevent the operation of the control circuit on the basis of incorrect input data. The comparison between detectors A and C, Fig. 3, is performed in both an analogue and a digital manner. The output of the detectors 42 and 46, which each comprise a series of electrodes at different levels which are shorted out by the water level, are fed to a digital to analogue converter 50 and a digital to analogue converter 51. The outputs of the individual detectors are recorded on meters 52 and 53, and any difference between the two level detectors is recorded on central zero meter 54. A digital output which may be used to actuate an alarm is provided by means of relay contacts 71 to 82 which are connected alternately to level detectors 42 and 46. In correct operation the conductors 83 and 84 should be isolated from one another, however if a difference in the levels recorded by the two detectors exists then one pair of contacts at least will be connected in such a way as to short across the two conductors 83, 84. The output of the logic units 61, 62 may be fed to displays 90, 91 and 92 to indicate the liquid level. These displays also act as fault indicators. U.K. Specification 1,056,032 is referred to.
