Abstract

1,257,477. Colourimetry. BRITISH TITAN Ltd. Oct.30, 1969 [Dec. 7, 1968], No. 58235/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Division F1] A device for the determination of a substance by colourimetry e.g., the iron content in a titanium dioxide slurry in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment by the sulphate process includes a peristaltic pump (see Division F1) having three pipes 13, 14, 15 through which is pumped a solution of ammonium persulphate, a solution of the substance to be measured, i.e. titanium dioxide slurry and a solution of thioglycolic acid respectively. The outlets of the pipes are fed to a mixing head 20 in which the contents of the pipes 13, 14 are mixed prior to the mixing with the contents of pipe 15, thence to a mixing tube 21 and a sampling tube 22. The tube 22 overlies a cadmium sulphide photo-cell 23 which by means of a lamp 25 detects the iron content of the mixture which is measured by a microammeter 29 in a detection device 24. The solutions exhaust through a pipe 26. The solution of thioglycolic acid also includes ammonia and citric acid.
