Abstract
1,256,676. Measuring battery charge state. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE AG. July 10, 1970 [July 26, 1969], No. 33696/70. Heading G1U. The state of charge of a battery 3 is determined by measuring its internal impedance (which rises as the battery discharges), this being effected by passing a constant alternating current through the battery and measuring the resulting voltage drop across the battery. The actual value of the alternating current passing through the battery from a generator 1, amplifier 2 and coupling transformer 4 and capacitor 5, is represented by the potential across a resistor 11 in the battery circuit. This potential, after filtering and amplifying 13, 14, 15, 16, is compared with a preset potential in a comparator amplifier 17 in order to control the generator amplifier 2 and thereby maintain the current constant. The resulting voltage across the battery may, after filtering and amplifying, be displayed on a meter 9, or used to control indicator lamps 10, that corresponding to the lowest state of charge being arranged to flash when energized.
