Abstract

1,256,515. Multi-slide coating hopper. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 6 Nov., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 52660/68. Heading D1L. An apparatus for coating a flexible web with photographic solutions comprises a multislide coating hopper, as described in Specification 834,527, in which at least one of its lowermost discharge slots meets its downwardly-inclined slide surface at an obtuse angle, so giving the solution a component of velocity down the slide surface. The discharge slot may be straight, as shown, may have its exit end abruptly enlarged (Fig. 2 not shown) or may be curved (Fig. 3 not shown). A coating solution C 1 is continuously pumped by a metering pump P through inlet 11, cavity 10 and narrow discharge slat 12 onto a slide surface 13 where it forms a uniform layer 14 and flows under gravity to form a coating bead B between lip 15 of the surface 13 and an upward-travelling web W to be coated. A second layer 21 of a coating solution C 2 is similarly formed and flows down slide surface 20 until it meets and flows on top of layer 14, the two layers then flowing together to the coating bead.
