Abstract

1,256,217. Photoconductors; image pick-up tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 May, 1970 [27 May, 1969], No. 24964/70. Headings H1D and H1K. A photoconductive material comprises PbO containing mixed crystals of PbO and SnO. The addition of SnO to PbO decreases the energy gap and hence shifts the absorption edge to longer wavelengths thus improving the red sensitivity. As shown, Fig. 1, the target of a vidicon camera tube comprises a photoconductive layer 15 deposited on a transparent electrode 13 of SnO 2 . The layer 15 may be of uniform composition or may comprise a layer containing mixed crystals of PbO and SnO formed on electrode 13 covered with a layer of tetragonal PbO on which the electron beam impinges. The mixed crystal layer may be formed by evaporating powdery mixed crystals or a mixture of powdery PbO and powdery SnO from a single crucible or by simultaneous evaporation of PbO and SnO from separate crucibles. Methods of preparing the mixed crystals are described. The deposited photoconductive layer is exposed to oxygen ion bombardment by means of a discharge in an O 2 atmosphere to incorporate excess O 2 into the surface of the target to form a barrier for electrons absorbed by the surface from the scanning beam in use. A photoconductive cell may be produced by applying indigitated electrodes to a photoconductive layer containing mixed crystals of PbO and SnO.
