Abstract

1,255,857. Silver dye-bleaching preparation. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. June 24, 1969 [June 25, 1968], No.31834/69. Heading G2C. A dye-bleaching preparation for the photographic silver dye-bleach process contains an acid, a water-soluble iodide and optionally a dye-bleaching catalyst, wherein a reductone is also present. The reductone may be an aci-reductone which may be a cyclic or acyclic compound possessing a 3-carbonyl-endiol-(1, 2) group. The reductone should have a normal potential reductone/dehydroreductone which is more negative than the normal potential iodine/iodide. The preparation may contain reductic acid, α, #-dihydroxy-acrolein, ascorbic acid, isoascorbic acid, 3-hydroxy-5- phenyl-tetronic acid, 3-hydroxy-5-phenyl-tetronimide or 5-α-chlorophenyl-3-hydroxy-tetronimide as the reductone. The acid may be a strong acid or may be acetic or citric acid. The water-soluble iodide may be hydriodic acid, ammonium iodide, sodium iodide, or potassium iodide. The dyebleaching catalyst may be pyrazine, quinoxaline or phenazine. The preparation may be in the form of a dyestuff bleaching bath or in the form of a gel. The preparation may be introduced into an unexposed colour photographic silver halide material by, e. g. the application of protective layers or encapsulation of the active components so that the dye-bleaching action can only develop on processing the photographic material. These preparations are apparently stable and do not dissolve silver salts out of the materials, which would after their activity, and may be regenerated in extended operation.
