A disposable biopsy instrument comprises a tubular sheath 13 Fig. 2 with an ovate bevelled front end defining a shearing edge 83, a needle 17 with a tissue-receiving pocket 81 in its side and having an ovate tissue piercing end 82, the needle 17 being reciprocable within the sheath 13 from a first limit position in which the pocket 81 is within the sheath and the end 82 external thereof to a second limit position in which the pocket 81 is external to the sheath, and constraining means on the sheath and needle to prevent relative rotation during reciprocation. A needle support 53, Fig. 4, has a slide 69 extending forsheath support 21 to prevent relative rotation. sheath support 21 to prevent relative potation, an abutment 71 in the path 33 preventing forward extension of the sheath 13 over an end part 79, Fig. 2, of needle 17 by engagement with an end part 77, Fig. 4 of the slide 69. In the second limit position end part 77 abuts against a front wall 35 of the support 21 and front parts 59 of side walls 57 of the support 53 abut against the rear of the sheath support 21. The sheath may be a press-fit or cemented into slots (45), Fig. 6 (not shown) in wall 35 and transverse walls (39), (41), (43) between parallel side walls 25 of the support. The needle may be press-fitted or cemented into slots in partitions 61, 63 of the support 53. A tubular cover may be engaged on a projection 47 of support 21 to protect the forward end sections of the needle and sheath in the second limit position. The supports 21 and 53 may be made from rigid plastics material.
