Abstract

1,255,315. Valves. XOMOX CORP. 9 June 1970, No. 27984/70. Heading F2V. The actuating stem 12 of a rotary plug valve is sealed by an annular non-metallic diaphragm 28 seated on a shoulder 24 of the stem, a ring seal 32 and a metal diaphragm 30 with an upturned inner portion overlying the seal 32. A rigid ring 40 is urged by screws 44 towards the shoulder 24 to move the diaphragm 28 thereagainst and the ring 32 against the stem. The outer peripheries of the two diaphragms are clamped between the valve body 16 and a cover 18. A second metal diaphragm may underlie the diaphragm 30 and the ring seal 32. The diaphragm 28 and ring seal 32 may be made of P.T.F.E. or the seal 32 may be made of asbestos. In modifications the seal 32 is replaced by a stack of triangular or chevron-shaped rings and the ring 40 is replaced by a two-part ring having a resilient ring or annular metallic wave spring between the parts.
