Abstract

1,255,268. Filtration, dialysis. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 10 March, 1969 [12 April, 1968], No. 12508/69. Headings B1D and B1X. A layer of filter aid is formed on the upstream side of a tubular filter element and used as a base on which a dialysis membrane is subsequently deposited directly from the liquid being purified, dialysis then proceeding with a substantial flow (1 to 100 feet/sec.) of incoming liquid across the membrane to prevent solids build up thereon. The effect may be enhanced by turbulence promoters. The filter element may be sintered metal, ceramic, carbon or woven cloth such as a fire hose jacket. Filter aid may be asbestos or cellulose fibres, carbon, perlite, silica gel or diatomaceous earth, and may be deposited in three successive layers of different particle sizes (exemplified). In examples, a MgCl 2 solution was separated using a membrane formed by adding hydrous Zr (IV) oxide to the solution. Sewage effluent was purified using a membrane consisting of material originating from the effluent itself. Another membrane, comprising mixed poly (vinyl pyridine) and poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) deposited on a perlite filter aid layer, supported on a porous stainless steel tube of 10Á pore diameter, was used to separate salt solution. The filter aid particles are 0.01 to 100Á in diameter and form a bed 0.1 to 100Á thick.
