Abstract

1,253,788. Bearings. MOSKOVSKY VECHERNY METALLURGICHESKY INSTITUT. 3 July, 1970, No. 32436/70. Heading F2A. [Also in Division C7] Races 1, 2 and rolling elements 3 of a rolling bearing are made of steel and have a hardened layer with a hardness of 58 to 65 Rockwell at least on the rolling surfaces, the depth of the layer is 0À1 to 0À3 of the wall thickness of said races. The core of the races and of the rolling elements has a hardness of 30 to 45 Rockwell. The steel has a carbon content of 0À8 to 1À2% by volume and its hardenability satisfies the relation d cr = (0À7 to 1À4)S where S = the thickness of the race wall and d cr = the critical diameter, i.e. the diameter of a cylindrical specimen of the steel, hardened by through heating and rapid cooling to a hardness of 55 Rockwell. The steel may contain 0À9 to 1À1% carbon, 0À3 to 0À5% chromium, 0À1 to 0À3% silicon and 0À1 to 0À3% manganese, or may contain 0À9 to 1À1% carbon, 0À4 to 0À6% chromium, not over 0À1% silicon and 0À1 to 0À3% manganese. The races and rolling elements are heated to a temperature above A 1 and then intensively cooled by means of a high-speed shower or stream of water.
