[Also in Division B2] An impact tool for crushing cans 14 and breaking bottles comprises a handle 4 having an enlarged head 6 with points 46 for holding an article to be crushed by kinetic energy of a driver 8 movable freely lengthwise of the handle. As shown, the driver 8 has a hand-grip 48 by which it is moved through the hollow handle 4 which is made of aluminium or a plastics, preferably reinforced. The head 6 is made of cast steel and is fixed to the handle 4 by screwthreads or a bayonet fastening 26, 30, a neoprene gasket 44 separating teeth 36 on the head from those 44 on the handle. Instead of casting the points 46 with the head 6 they may be attached by screw-threads, press-fitting or brazing. A steel driver 8 is used having a plastics sleeve 48 which may be fixed by an adhesive. Preferably a sound-absorbing cap 52 is fitted to the driver 8, or a plastics plug may be placed in the head, or the handle may have a closed end. A plastics shroud 10 surrounding the handle, is located over a dustbin 12. In another construction, Figs. 6 and 9 (not shown), points (94, 95) of different sizes are provided on the head (76) which may be case hardened. The shroud (78) may be adhesivelysecured to the handle (72), and the driver may be formed in two parts (74, 110) preferably with a plastics tip (116). A plastics layer (118) may be provided against which the driver strikes. If the tip (116) and sheet (118) are not provided, the driver should have a tapered end.
