Abstract
1,251,703. Direct mono-esterification of aryl (or hetero) malonic acids. PFIZER Inc. 24 April, 1969 [23 Jan., 1969], No. 21117/69. Heading C2C. A process for the mono-esterification of aryl (or hetero) malonic acids comprises reacting an aryl (or hetero) malonic acid with an organic compound containing an esterifiable -OH group in the presence of a thionyl chloride or bromide and a catalytic amount of N,N-di- (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl formamide or acetamide in the presence of an ether solvent. A long list of esters which can be prepared by this proces is given in the examples. The following esters have been specifically prepared in the examples: mono-2- isopropylphenyl phenylmalonate, mono-4-isopropylphenyl phenylmalonate and mono-5- indanylphenylmalonate.
