Abstract
1,251,461. Infusion devices. T. H. F. R. ERICSON. 14 April, 1970, No. 17769/70. Heading ASR. An infusion device for intravenous injections, e.g. blood transfusions, comprises a transparent polyethylene drip chamber 5 having one or more inwardly projecting longitudinal V-shaped folds 10 and a non-return valve 2 adapted to open under suction in the drip-chamber 5 to admit blood from the inlet tube 1. The tube 1 is connected to the drip-chamber 5 by a stopper 4 and flange 3. An outlet pipe 8 is connected to a needle via a tube 9 and to the drip-chamber 5 by a second non-return valve 7 opening under excess pressure in the chamber 5 to allow blood to flow from the drip-chamber 5 to the needle. A strainer 6 is attached to the pipe 8 in the drip-chamber. On compressing the drip-chamber 5, blood is expelled through valve 7 and on subsequent release of the chamber 5, blood is drawn into the dripchamber 5 through valve 2. On rapid squeezing and releasing of the drip chamber the blood level therein rises. Under normal conditions the blood drips in through valve 2 and out through valve 7. Ideally the level of blood should be kept above the top of the strainer 6.
