Abstract
1,251,172. Apparatus for washing articles. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 9 April, 1970 [10 April, 1969], No. 16933/70. Heading F4X. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for cleaning articles, e.g. contaminated clothing, by washing them with a warm mixture of condensed water vapour and a solvent which has a lower specific gravity than water and is immiscible therewith, consists of a vessel 1 closed at its upper end by a cover 2 cooled e.g. by water, the vessel being subdivided into upper and lower compartments by a strainer 5 (e.g. of superimposed slotted plates), the articles 9 to be washed being located in a holder 7 in the upper compartment whilst the lower compartment contains the solvent 11 and a steam supply pipe 6. In use, a mixture of steam and evaporated solvent passes upwardly through the strainer 5, heats the holder 7 and then condenses on the cooled surface of the cover 2. The condensate falls into the holder 7 immersing and washing the articles 9 therein and eventually discharges automatically through a siphon tube 8 to the lower compartment where the solvent 12 separates and floats upon the water 12 of condensation. The water and also the solvent if contaminated by washed-off materials, may be drawn off through a valved duct 4.
