A housing for accommodating a stick of cosmetic material such as a lipstick comprises a body comprising two parts which are relatively rotatable, the body carrying a holder adapted to replaceably mount the stick of cosmetic material, the holder being adjustable in the axial direction of the housing body on rotation of one part of the housing body relatively into the other part, a cover flap 10 being laterally pivoted to the non-rotatable part of the housing body and biased by spring means to the opened position, the rotatable part of the housing body having a portion 21 which co-operates with the peripheral wall of the cover flap so as to move the cover flap to the closed position when the stick is retracted into the housing body by reverse rotation of the rotatable part of the housing body. In the construction shown, the fixed part of the housing body consists of an outer casing section 2 which is rigidly connected to a sleeve 5 by its lower end portion 6 the sleeve 5 being longer than the section 2 and protruding beyond its upper end. The rotatable body part consists of an outer casing section 1 and a sleeve 3 which is rigidly connected to the section 1 and which is longer than the section 1 and protrudes beyond its lower end to be disposed between the sleeve 5 and the outer casing section 2. The sleeve 5 mounts the cover flap and the portion 21 which engages the peripheral wall of the cover flap is a part of the casing section 1; it has a camming surface 22 which engages the cover flap to move it to the closed position, the sleeve 3 has a longitudinally extending slot which opens at the bottom of the sleeve and the sleeve 5 has a helically extending slot 7 which again opens at the bottom of the sleeve. The holder has a pin 20 which enters both of the slots 4 and 7 and the rotation of the rotatable body part causes the helical slot to move relative to the longitudinal slot which causes the holder to be moved upwardly so that the stick 19 protrudes from the top of the housing body. The cover flap has a pin 13 which in the closed position of the cover flap is disposed in recesses in the sleeve 3 and 5; the recess in the sleeve 3 is L-shaped so that the last part of the rotation of the rotatable body part traps the pin so that the cover flap is positively fastened. The stick in its holder can be inserted into the housing from the bottom by removing a plug 16.
