Abstract

1,249,952. Continuous casting; electroslag refining. BOHLER & CO. A.G. GEB. 14 Nov., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 55858/69. Heading B3F. Castings having varying cross-sections or dimensions along their length are prepared by an electroslag refining process, by successively fusing a consumable electrode 40 into a series of vertically superimposed cooled moulds 10, 20, 30. The first mould 10 rests on a copper base plate 82 and the electrode 40 is fused into a molten slag blanket inside the mould. The mould 10 is raised on a column 14 until the required length of casting is built up and the upper part of mould 10 meets the lower part of a further mould 20 of greater cross-section. A further section of the casting is built up by fusing the electrode into the mould 20 whilst raising the mould. Finally, a further casting section is built up by a mould 30. After the metal has solidified in each mould cooling can be retarded, by passing hot water through the mould coolant chambers 13, 23, 33. If the moulds are split then they can be opened to retard casting cooling. If desired, casting cooling can be slowed by surrounding the casting with a heat-insulating material which may be heated.
