A fastening mechanism for the door of a vehicle or a freight container comprises an operating bar 12 having a fastening member at each end, a handle 14 extending from the bar at a position intermediate the ends of the bar and having a spring-loaded latch member mounted for sliding movement along its length, and a recessed panel 10 having a headed keeper 19 extending outwardly from the base of the recess and adapted to engage with the latch member 26 to retain the handle in the recess. In the construction shown, the recess is formed in a pressing 10 secured in an opening in the front panel of the door although in a modification the recess can be formed in the door panel itself; the bar 12 extends through bushes 13 mounted in the side walls near one end of the pressing 10 and the handle has .two vertically spaced ring portions 15 secured to the bar 12 by drive pins 16. A torsion spring is fitted around the bar in a gap between the ring portions and acts to urge the handle into the pressing to the fastening position of the fastening mechanism. In such position the handle .lies wholly within the pressing. The latch member, is a plate secured to the handle by two bolts 23 passing through slots 25 in the latch member and guided by bushes 24 on the bolts; it has a circular opening 27 in which the head 21 of the stud 19 is received. A tension spring 28 acts between an end portion of the latch member and the handle to urge the latch member to the fastening position. A T-shaped opening 29 is formed in the handle and an end portion of the latch member extends through part of the opening to allow the latch member to be retracted. A plate 32 welded to the inner wall of the pressing also projects through the opening 29 and holes 33 in the plate register with corresponding holes 34 in the handle when the handle is in the fastening position so that the handle can be padlocked to the plate 32. The hole 35 is provided in the lug 31 to allow a wire to connect the lug 31 to the plate 32. The handle also carries a key-operated barrel lock mechanism 36 to the barrel of which a hook 37 is connected which can be engaged with a pin on the adjacent end portion of the latch member to look the latch member in the fastening position. The latch member also carries a member 42 which projects through the door to enable the latch member to be operated from inside the door.
