A rotary cutter for working comparatively soft materials, such as wood, plastics and the like, comprises at least one cutter unit 3, Figs. 1 and 3, provided with insertable cutting elements 23, the elements being located between abutments 15, 21 provided near the periphery of the unit. A number of units may be secured between a nut and collar 4 on a shaft 1, and each unit is formed around its periphery with a plurality of circular recesses 9. A portion of each recess constitutes an abutment 15 and a further abutment 21 is provided by a member 19 located in a slot in the recess. The cutting elements may be in the form of segments of a cylinder seated on the surfaces 11 of the recesses and urged into engagement with the abutments by clocks 29 on screws 33. In another embodiment, one 109, Fig. 4, of the abutments is formed on a block 105 brazed or otherwise secured in the recess and the element 111 is urged against the abutments 107, 109 by a screw 113 and base 119. In further embodiments, the elements may be formed as prismatic bodies have curved surfaces at their ends engaging the recesses or the recesses have a cut-out so that the elements engage the recesses at spaced apart surfaces. The elements in one cutter unit are staggered with respect to those in adjacent units and are aligned with cut-outs 8, Fig. 3, in those units to permit axial withdrawal from their units. At least the cutting edges of the elements may be of cemented carbide or cutting alloy steel. The elements are reversible so that both edges thereof may be used.
