Abstract
1,248,131. Cartons. JOHN WADDINGTON Ltd. 30 Jan., 1969 [8 Feb., 1968], No. 5243/69. Divided out of 6292/68. Heading B8P. A carton blank is folded-up and joined into an open ended tube with end flaps closed subsequent to filling, the carton top having depending flanges overlapping the front and ends externally and there being a line of weakness at the upper extremity of the front, so that the carton can be opened by braking the line of weakness and lifting the entire top as part of a hinged lid. As shown, the blank of Fig. 2 is erected to form the carton of Fig. 1 with a front wall 2 having along its upper edge an inwardly-directed flap 44 secured by a line of glue 42 to the inside of the carton lid 8. A weakened line 46 between the flap 44 and the front 2 is ruptured to open the lid. The side flaps 50 of the lid may be glued at 58 to the side walls 30. In one modification, the lid 8 has a rear downwardly-directed flange (62), Fig. 4 (not shown), hinged at its lower edge to a flap (64) turned down from the back wall 6 of the carton to which it is glued at (65): the hinge line (60) of the lid is then below the level of the carton top. In another modification, the lid has a rear flange (62), Fig. 5 (not shown), secured by glue (86) adjacent the bottom of the rear wall 6 below the hinge line (60), and the flap (83) at the top of the front wall (2) of the carton extends down the front wall and is secured by glue (84) to the inside of the lid front flap 48. The line of weakening 46 along the top of the front wall 2 connects to the flap (83). In another embodiment, the front wall 2 is inwardly inclined, Fig. 6 (not shown), to facilitate opening the lid. Instead of gluing, the blank may be suitably coated and then heat sealed.
