Abstract
124,809. Stokes, F. W. S. April 13, 1916. Projectile fuses.-Consists rnainly in arranging two limbs or lengths of time-fuse side by side in such a way that the covering of the fuse can be torn or perforated to short-circuit the limbs according to the time required. In the form shown in Fig. 2, one limb A of the time-fuse is shorter than the other and carries a percussion cap B', and the other limb A<1> is connected to a detonator C, which fits. within a tube within the projectile; a pad may be placed in the end of this tube. The fuse is fixed within a casing D slidabiy mounted within a socket E attached to the projectile G<1>. When the projectile is discharged, the casing D sets back, and the percussion cap B' or a firing- pin thereon strikes a part G on the projectile and ignites the time-fuse. The casing D, if of soft metal, is normally held in place by a pin F which tears the casing when this sets back; if the casing is of hard metal, the pin F is removed before the projectile is discharged, and an additional wire is used to hold it in place until sheared by the discharge. Projectile fuses, apparatus for setting. - The fuse is perforated at the desired point by the apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A short tube H adapted to fit over the socket E of the fuse has a spiral slot H<1> and is surrounded 'by a sleeve K, which can be adjusted along the tube H and then clamped thereto by a screw L. The sleeve K has a lateral tubular extension K<1> also provided with a spiral slot K<2> and surrounded by a sleeve N secured by a screw N<1>. A short tubular guide M is screwed into the extension K<1> and projects through the slot H<1> of the tube H and into a slot E<2> in the socket E; the sleeve K is thus guided along the tube H, and graduations are provided on the tube H to read off the setting of the sleeve K. A rod J<2> is fitted in the tubular extension K<1> with a stud J<1> in the slot K<2>, and carries a firing- pin J extending through, and guided by, the small tube M. The rod J<2> is rotated by a handle J<3> and is simultaneously moved axially by the cooperation of the stud J<1> and slot K<2>; the pin J is thus forced through the limbs A<1>, A of the time-fuse to set it for the desired time.
