Abstract

1,247,812. Pipe couplings. HIGH TEMPERATURE ENGS. Ltd. 7 Jan., 1970 [10 Jan., 1969], No. 1706/69. Heading F2G. To achieve a connection of two pipe coupling bodies 11, 42, a sleeve 29, rotatably mounted on the first body 11, is screwed on to an externally screw-threaded portion 44 of the second body 42 and the leading edge 32 of the sleeve 29 engages at least one ball, thus forcing a locking ring 57 to slide rightwards against the action of a spring 59 until the ball falls into a recess 66 of the second body, whereupon the leading edge 32 passes over the ball and the spring 59 urges the locking ring leftwards to co-operate with an inclined wall 67 of the recess 66 in forcing the ball 63 into a groove 33 of the sleeve, thus locking the coupling as shown. A ring 65 may be employed to retain the ball or balls 63 in the uncoupled position. The coupling shown incorporates a valve operated as follows: a hollow plug 45 closed by a wall 48 is pushed back inside the second body 42 against a spring 51 by an endwall 12 of the first body 11, thus separating the plug from a cover sleeve 53 to open ports 49 located in the tubular wall of the plug; simultaneously, a retainer 54 which may be integral with the cover sleeve 53 pushes back a valve sleeve 19 against the action of a spring 21 to open ports 18 formed in the tubular wall of the first body 11 and a passage is formed between the ports 18, 49 as illustrated.
