Abstract

1,247,688. Polymeric colour couplers. AGFA GEVAERT. 4 Feb., 1968 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9218/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Polymeric colour couplers comprising the securing unit in which R 1 is hydrogen, halogen, C 1-4 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl and R 2 is the group -(CF 2 ) n -X, where X is H or F and n is 1-10, the group -CH(Y).CN, where Y is H or alkyl, or an optionally substituted aryl group, are obtained by polymerization of a monomer of the formula alone or with one or more non-colour forming co-monomers containing at least one ethylenic group. Specified co-monomers include acrylic acids, esters, acids and nitriles, vinyl esters and ethers, vinylheterocycles, vinyl aromatic compounds, particularly styrene and its derivatives, and other unsaturated carboxylic acids. Comonomers are selected to provide copolymers which are compatible with photographic colloid compositions. The polymers are prepared by conventional polymerization techniques employing the usual initiators, emulsion polymerization in aqueous gelatin to provide latices for photographic use being preferred. Examples 7-22 describe the preparation of copolymers of the acrylamido-2-pyrazolin-5-ones with methylmethacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid/ethyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl acrylate and t-butylacrylamide and the homopolymer of 1 - (2,2,2 - trifluoroethyl) - 3 - methacrylamido - 2 - pyrazolin - 5- one. The polymers are used as couplers in colour photographic silver halide emulsions (see Division G2).
