Abstract

1,247,675. Valves; fluid pressure brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 30 Dec., 1968 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 3704/68. Headings F2F and F2V. With solenoid 53 de-energized, spring 54 causes pilot valve 49 to close vent passage 47, whereby air from inlet 13 leaking across diaphragm 32 via filter 40 and restriction 38, establishes a pressure balance across the diaphragm such that spring 31 can force closure member 25 on to exhaust seat 22 and off inlet seat 21. The work port 17 can lead to a brakeapplying cylinder of a rail vehicle, and the solenoid can be energized in response to excessive deceleration of a wheel to unseat the pilot valve 49, thereby venting chamber 41 and allowing inlet pressure beneath the diaphragm to raise the latter to connect port 17 to exhaust. Wheel lock is thereby prevented. The electrical supply can derive from a generator driven by the wheel and charging a battery or capacitor. Washer 30 throttles the flow to prevent flutter. In a modification, separate p.t.f.e. bush 48 is omitted and the vent passage is controlled by the lower end of the armature. Disc 55 retains the armature during assembly and anchors sealing diaphragm 57.
