Abstract
1,247,279. Centrifugal strainer. WESTERN STATES MACHINE CO. 10 Dec., 1969, No. 60281/69. Heading BID. In a centrifugal strainer for sugar slurry, the solid fraction of which is thrown radially outwards from the lip 12 of the rotary basket, caking is avoided by providing a downwardly sloping frusto-conical partition 30, lined with polytetrafluoroethylene, on to which the sugar is thrown, a set of circumferentially spaced scrapers 52, 53 engaging the partition 30, and either the partition or the scrapers rotating slowly about the same axis as the basket. In Fig. 2, partition 30 is encircled by a roller chain 47 engaging a drive pinion 45. The scraper unit comprises flexible blades 52 on an arm 53 which is adjustable by locking device 55 .. 58 to compensate for blade wear, adjustment being made to head 59 outside the casing. Blades 52 may be replaced by wires or brushes. The sugar crystals strike partition 30 which deflects them downwards, the scrapers removing any sugar tending to stick to the partition.
