Abstract
1,247,062. N-Dimethylacylamides. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 6 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6412/69. Heading C2C. N,N-Dimethylacylamides containing C 2-4 acyl radicals are obtained by reacting an excess of dimethylamine and a C 2-4 aliphatio carboxylic acid at elevated temperature in a continuous manner on a column with distillation of the amide formed, wherein the amine and the acid in a molar ratio 1-1:1 to 5:1 are introduced at 80-220‹ C. and pressure of 0À1-2 atmospheres in the absence of a catalyst into a mixture of N,N-dimethylacylamide and its carboxylic acid, the acid content of the mixture corresponding at least to the amount of acid present in the azeotropic mixture of the N,N-dimethylacylamide and its carboxylic acid. The ratio of amine to acid is preferably 1À5:1 to 2:1, the temperature 160-210‹ C. and atmospheric pressure is advantageously employed. A column having 25-80 theoretical trays is preferred and the amide preferably withdrawn at a point 17-34 theoretical trays above the point at which the acid is fed in. In the example acetic acid is reacted with dimethylamine in a molar ratio of 1:1À7 at 201‹ C. under atmospheric pressure.
