Abstract

1,247,001. Printing apparatus. SERVICE (ENGS.) Ltd. 27 Jan., 1969 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 4376/68. Heading B6C. Articles printed with successive colours are dusted between printing operations so that an impression produced in one operation will not be damaged in second or subsequent operations. Preferably the articles are of ceramic ware and receive offset impressions from a series of offset pads. The offset pads may receive impressions from intaglio or relief plates, may be pressed against an inked plate or belt through an apertured template, or may pick up impressions from metal plates printed on by screen printing. The inks used may be made up of pigments in polymerizable media, and may be dusted with powders which disappear or become unnoticeable during firing of the ware, such as starch, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydrated ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate and graphite. Alternatively powders which remain in relief may be used, such as French chalk, hydrated alumina, plaster of Paris and polyethylene. The dusting powder may be applied by sprinkling, brushing or by spraying from an air nozzle, suitably as a dispersion in a fastdrying liquid. Excess powder may be removed by an air blast.
