Abstract
1,246,829. Semi-conductive compositions; cables. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 22 Oct., 1968 [27 Oct., 1967], No. 50139/68. Headings H1A and H1K. [Also in Division H2] A highly resistive composition, the resistance of which varies with applied voltage, is made by dispersing in a polymer preferably having a dielectric constant ##2 metal particles forming 20-90 wt. per cent of the composition, the particles being of sizes spread throughout the range 0À05-50Á and the average particle size (defined) being 1-30Á. The composition is used as a tape, as a heat-shrinkable tube, or as extruded material for stress-grading in cable joints or terminations and as the insulation for TV aerial wires or sparking plug coils and leads. Two cable constructions are given:-in one, successive layers of insulation outwards from the metallic core have increasing metal particle content and the outermost layer has such a high particle content (>90 wt. per cent) that the layer shows metallic conductivity and is used in operation as an earthed shield (the particle size range in this layer may be from 0.05-200 Á); in the other construction, successive layers of insulation outwardly from the metallic core have decreasing metal particle content. Suitable polymers are butyl rubber, ethylene-propylene copolymers, ethylene-propylene terpolymers with the ethylene and propylene in the main chain and dienes in side chains (EPDM), styrene-butadiene rubber, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, and mixtures of these materials. The particles may be of elemental metals, of magnetic alloys, or of non-magnetic alloys. Examples are:-Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Pt, Ag, Cu, Au, Zn, Al; Fe-Ni, Co-Ni, Cu 2 MnAl, Cu 2 MnSn (magnetic); Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn, and Al-Mg (non- magnetic). (A comparative example was Fe 2 O 3 particles.) The particle mix may be prepared for example by sieving through 500 mesh and mixing the product with colloidal particles (Ca 0.05 Á) in a suitable proportion. Organosilicon compounds may be added to the polymer mix (or may be used to treat the particles) to ensure good bonding of the metal particles. In two specific examples Fe and Al particles respectively are used-in addition various organic additives and small quantities of ZnO and Pb 3 O 4 are included.
