Abstract
124,670. New, E. S. Sept. 12, 1918. Pocket igniters, frictional.- The wick of a pyrophoric igniter for igniting cigars, pipes, &c. is surrounded by a shield or chamber having air inlets so that the vapour from the wick mixes with air and produces a blue flame through the outlet from the shield or chamber. Fig. 5 shows a cylindrical shield c having air inlets d and carrying the spark-producing means c, a lateral aperture c<1> permitting the passage of the igniting- spark from the spark-producing means. The cylindrical reservoir a is inserted into the shield c so as to abut against a shoulder therein, or is screwed into the shield or is made integral with it, and the inlets d are closed by means of a removable cap when the igniter is not in use. In a modification, the central part of the top of the reservoir is out away and the space formed is covered with gauze through which the wick or preferably the wick tube passes so that vapour passes through the gauze into the shield. In a second modification, the shield is of elliptical cross-section and the spark-producing means is arranged within the shield. In a second form. the outer end of the shield c is permanently closed, the flame outlet is arranged at the side of the shield, and the shield and the reservoir telescope one into the other and are connected by a bayonet-slot connexion. The apertures in the shield are closed by pushing the shield down on the container.
