Abstract

1,246,627. Tobacco-smoke filters. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd., and D. W. MOLINS. 13 Sept., 1968 [15 Sept., 1967], No. 42269/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for producing a continuous filter rod having powdered material between plugs includes a device for dispensing measured quantities of the material onto a moving wrapper carrying spaced plugs. The device comprises a hollow wheel 3 with compartments 6 which initially receive the material, e.g. activated carbon from a hopper 1 and subsequently receive, if necessary, via their open inner ends further material from within the wheel. A masking plate 5 prevents discharge of material from the open outer ends of each compartment until the compartment reaches a discharge region, and a masking plate 8 prevents communication between the interior of the wheel and each compartment at the discharge region. A paddle wheel may be provided within the wheel to force the further material into the compartments if required. In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 3 the compartments 6 are the outer portions of radial passages and the masking plate 29 which prevents communication between the interior of the wheel and the compartments at the discharge region engages in an annular groove 30. Prior to passing the discharge region the wrapper is formed into a trough and after passing the discharge region the wrapper is formed into a tube enclosing the plugs and the material. Gumming and heating devices (not shown) secure the edges of the wrapper.
