Abstract

1, 246, 295. Photo-electric switches. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. Dec. 19, 1968, No.60328/68. Heading G1A. A non-contact-making switch comprises a light source illuminating a detector across a gap within a switch body and an aperture providing the only means of access to the gap, the aperture and the gap being of such a size as not to admit an obturator substantially larger than a human finger tip. Light from a source 2, Fig. 1, passing by way of fibre optics 3 to a detector 4 is interrupted by the operators finger. Lenses may be provided to improve optical efficiency, Fig. 2, (not shown). In Fig. 3 the detector 4 is in the base of the trough and a diaphragm 8 prevents ingress of dirt. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the diaphragm is replaced by a button actuated by the operator's finger. The light source, which is either self radiating or excited like a fluorescent tube, may be annular, Fig. 6 (not shown). The light source 14, Fig. 7 may be beneath the trough, and the operators finger closes the aperture 13a. Infrared transmissive filters may be located in the aperture 13a and in front of the cell 4 to reduce the effect of ambient light. A mirror may be located so as to reflect more of the light passing through aperture 13a to the cell 4. A plurality of switches may be combined to make a keyboard Fig. 5 (not shown).
