Abstract

1,246,290. Boring earth. HUGHES TOOL CO. 6 Dec., 1968 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 58171/68. Heading E1F. Drilling apparatus comprises a drill stem 60, a motor 50 having a hollow drive shaft through which a non-circular portion of the drill stem extends to be rotated thereby; means 80 to move the drill stem through the drive shaft to thrust it against the earth and control means provided so that motor 50 is only rotated when a valve supplying fluid to means 80 to raise or lowerthe drill stem is in its neutral position. Motor 50 may be a hydraulic or pneumatic motor, with means 80 being comprised by a hydraulic or pneumatic cyclinder having a piston connected to the drill stem. The piston may rotate with the drill stem or may be non- rotatably mounted. A low pressure line is connected to means 80 through valve (124') to apply thrust to the stem during drilling, with a pressure relief valve being provided to prevent an excessive build up of pressure. Valve (124') can be reversed to lift the stem slightly should it become stuck. Drill stem 60 may carry an auger 70, roller or drag bit, or an under reamer; The drill stem, which is raised to its drilling position by cylinder 18 and can be tilted at an angle to the vertical by cylinder 23, is supported by a carriage 29 movable longitudinally on rails 20 which are carried by a turntable 15 for rotation through 240‹.
