In a D.C. motor including an armature 1 in whose circuit are connected in series an inductive resistance 4 and a winding 3 of auxiliary poles, the commutation is improved by the provision of an auxiliary winding 5 and an additional auxiliary winding 7 both arranged on the cores of the auxiliary poles and connected in parallel with the inductive resistance 4, and a capacitance 6 connected in series with the auxiliary winding 5. The motor may be a locomotive traction motor supplied through rectifiers, and the capacitance 6 and winding 7 improve the commutation respectively under constant and fluctuating load conditions. The windings 3, 5, 7 are connected accordantly.
