Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A shoe sole of plasticised polyvinyl chloride may be bonded to a shoe bottom with an adhesive composition which is formed by mixing p-nitrophenol, a polyisocyanate and a substantially linear polyurethane in an inert solvent, the amount of polyisocyanate being in excess of that which would provide just sufficient NCO groups available for reaction with active hydrogen containing groups of the polyurethane, and the amount of p-nitrophenol being such as to provide 1 to 8% by weight of that part of the composition which is not solvent. In specific Examples, the adhesive compositions are prepared by mixing a polyisocyanate derived from I, 6-hexane diisocyanate, water or glycerol in solution in equal parts of ethylene glycol acetate and xylene, with part of a solvent mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene, dissolving a commercial thermoplastic polyesterurethane in the solution, adding the p-nitrophenol and then adding the remainder of the solvent to adjust the viscosity of the composition. The adhesive composition may be applied to the shoe bottom so as to provide a dry film thereon, and subsequently a molten polyvinyl chloride composition may be injected at a temperature of 170‹C into a sole-shaped mould cavity defined in part by the shoe bottom and in part by a mould so as to fill the mould and so mould and attach a sole to the shoe bottom.
